The Troll's Tongue β Norway's most iconic rock formation and one of the world's greatest hikes.
Trolltunga (The Troll's Tongue) is a spectacular piece of rock that juts horizontally out from the mountain about 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in the municipality of Ullensvang in Vestland county. It's one of the most spectacular scenic viewpoints in Norway and has become one of the country's most popular hiking destinations.
The rock formation was formed during the ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago, when glacial water froze inside the mountain and broke off large chunks, leaving this dramatic tongue-shaped overhang. Standing on the edge of Trolltunga, with nothing but air between you and the lake far below, is an experience that combines raw fear with absolute exhilaration.
The hike to Trolltunga is demanding but immensely rewarding. The round trip covers approximately 27 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 800 meters. Most hikers need 10-12 hours to complete the journey, making it a full-day commitment that rewards every step with increasingly stunning views.
